Hi, I'm Keith Hughes. I'm a P2, that means second-year student, at Binghamton University School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences. I'm here to show you our ultra modern building with all you need to complete your Doctor of Pharmacy degree and be able to practice at the top of your license.
The home of the School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, this amazing building opened in 2018, and includes everything that a PharmD student needs to learn how to offer patient-centered care. The atrium with our sculpture of caffeine molecules is a great place to meet fellow students, study, and hang out. There's even real coffee beans at the base!
Our classrooms are located on the first floor and are equipped with the latest in technology and furniture that can be reconfigured depending on what's happening in class, such as lectures, team-based learning or small group work. Our reading room is a great place to study or for quiet gatherings. If you're wondering about the artwork on the walls, there are enlarged pictures of the drug development and biomarker research our faculty work on it in the labs on the fourth floor.
Here in our compounding lab, you learn how to make individualized drugs for patients. The monitors throughout the room make it easy for us to see what the instructors are demonstrating. In the skills lab and in consultation rooms, we practice how to work directly with patients taking blood pressures and histories to counseling them on the prescription. Set up like an actual retail pharmacy, the community pharmacy has robotic drug dispensers, counting machines, and software that allows us to properly label prescriptions. Though, we use candy and placebos in place of the real thing.
We learn how to treat patients in all kinds of real-life situations here in our simulation lab. The adult male and female mannequin, and the infant mannequin can be programmed to present almost any type of health issue a person may have. Students have to work on healthcare teams to make the best decision for treatment. It's nerve wracking, but exciting at the same time.
There are a lot of study spaces in the building as well. So there's no need to worry about what to do between classes, or when you have an exam coming up. Our third and fourth floors are devoted to our research labs. Our faculty aren't only teachers working to develop drugs and therapeutics to treat diseases, including Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, cancer, and Lyme disease, among others. We have a research track as well if you're especially interested in research.
Thank you for joining me on this virtual tour. As you can see, we have a lot to offer you here and we can't wait for you to join us.
